The Beggar

The Beggar

Give me the feel of a well built hull,
Of a jib, a mast, and a sail,
And give me the cry of a gray-winged gull,
And give me the scream of a gale.

Give me the feeling that drives some mad,
From the fear that comes with the storm,
And give me the lightening from God’s great hand,
From the heavens whence it is born.

Give me the swell that is crazy in flight,
To get away from the rest of the sea,
And give me the beaches all covered with white,
That receive and return it to me.

Give me the wild, pounding surf,
A thousand miles from it’s home,
As it dashes itself to death on the rocks,
And is born again as the foam.

Give me the stars in moon-lit sky,
That is studded like gems in a crown,
And give me O God, thy attentive ear,
If I am about to drown.

And what do I have to offer thee,
For the gifts I wish to receive?
I guess dear Lord, the greatest of all,
Is my soul which says, in Thee I believe.
