High upon a hillside bare,
Without a thought, without a care,
I started in to digging there,
…all alone.
I did not seek the hidden gold,
Nor rubies in my hand to hold,
Or diamonds which I could enfold
…just a stone.
One which only God had seen,
Had touched, had felt, had made so clean,
One not made for King or Queen,
…or those unknown.
Standing deep within the pit,
I cast mine eyes in search of it,
And there amid the sand and grit,
…I found a bone.
Hardened by a million years,
Coated with unknown veneers,
Waiting for an Angel’s tears,
…all alone.
Climbing out of the abyss,
I started my analysis,
Could this be of the Genesis,
…or just a bone?
Truly, God had wrought it well,
Disturbed it not once it fell,
Was it of his clientele,
…of those unknown?
Of this much I am very sure,
Everything he made was pure,
A universe in miniature,
…stone or bone.
Perhaps I was the first to see,
To touch, to feel the majesty,
Of his great work, and just for me,
…all alone.
